All you need to know about Nagaland State Lotteries

Lotteries in Nagaland

Outlawed by some of the governments and embraced by some, a lottery is a form of gambling which involves the drawing of numbers for a prize.

Nagaland state government permits the selling and buying of lotteries in its state where the state draws a morning lottery, a day lottery and an evening lottery as part of its daily state scheme. A CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) of India’s report in 2016 revealed a few irregularities in the conduct of the Nagaland state lotteries which the government had introduced in order to generate revenues for development of the state.

CAG pointed out the loopholes in the selection of the distributors which led to litigation in the court case and a suspension of lotteries for 13 lotteries. It said that while the distributors made huge profits from the sale proceeds, the Nagaland state government was only left with its revenue to Minimum Guaranteed Revenue (MGR) per draw. To resurrect the operating mechanism in the state, CAG suggested a few amendments which were then worked upon by the state government which enabled its citizens again to indulge themselves in lotteries.

History of Lottery in Nagaland

Although it remains a controversial issue all over the world, the first recorded signs of a lottery are found as keno slips from the Chinese Han Dynasty between 205 and 187 BC. History suggests that these lotteries helped to finance major government projects like the Great Wall of China. While a few countries like France, England, United States, Spain etc permit lotteries within their territory, only 13 states in India have legalized lotteries.

Nagaland state government is one of the 13 governments which allows its citizens to try their fate in lotteries. It possesses India’s first poker license and it is the first Indian state to pass a law on the online game of skill.

The Process

The chances of winning a lottery scheme can depend on several factors including the count of winning numbers drawn, count of possible numbers etc.

The Nagaland state government draws three lotteries in a day where the participants can spend their money and see if fortune has favoured them. The results of these lotteries get drawn at 11:55 am, 04:00 pm and 8:00 respectively where the participants can check if the digits of their lottery ticket match with the one that has been enlisted as the winner of that particular lottery or not. If the digits of the lottery match with that of the numbers written on the ticket- Hurrah! the person wins an insanely huge amount in an online lottery.
